Retention and transformation are drivers for future development

in Kolding Municipality's
Architectural Design Code

Schulze+Grassov has developed an Architectural Design Code (Arkitekturpolitik) for Kolding Municipality titled: "The Future is the City We Build Together".

The Architectural Design Code establishes a framework for the conversation about how we will live, work, and reside in Kolding of the future. It serves as guidance for citizens, politicians, developers, and local authorities.

The Architectural Design Code communicates a shared language and direction that embraces Kolding’s ambitions, ensuring that development decisions are made with attention to coherence, quality, and sustainability.

It is published both digitally and in print. It is structured around a series of focus areas and guiding principles, becoming a tool for dialogue and local anchoring.

The Architectural Design Code is based on the principle “preserve or explain” and emphasises that we must preserve more and build less new – without blocking development.

“Preserve or explain” is about recognising the potential of what already exists, transforming the built environment, and giving it new purposes. This safeguards Kolding’s identity and creates the framework for future life.

"The Architectural Design Code is an important step for us as a municipality. It sets a direction where we can take care of what we already have and at the same time make room for new dreams. It is about creating a framework for the good life – by preserving and transforming rather than demolishing, and by ensuring quality in new construction.  This way, we can develop the whole of Kolding with care, sustainability, and respect for our history.”

— Merete Dissing, Municipal Director, Kolding Municipality
