S+G Plug n' Play in Copenhagen
With rising real estate sales in the southern section of the Ørestad District of Copenhagen the master development corporation By & Havn is looking to develop the last remaining open sites. Today the site is occupied by temporary use; a much-loved municipal facility called Plug n' Play. As one of the few city-wide destinations in Ørestaden, children and young people flock here for active recreation and parcour.
The masterplan competition entry is a radical departure from the existing urban model of Ørestaden with its oversized and autonomous urban blocks that fail to create good climate or popular shared amenities in public space. Working with the input of demographic specialists the practice has given shape to a more complex urban structure based around clear spatial hierarchies and nine distinct and different clusters of housing. A much greater level of plan solutions and place identities is created for communities to form at block and neighbourhood scale. Plug n' Play 2.0.
