S+G VISION FOR SHARED SPACE IN HISTORIC CITY CENTER

The City of Bregenz is the capital of the Region of Vorarlberg and regarded as a hotbed for high-quality design and sustainability in building design in Austria. Schulze+Grassov with Dietrich Untertrifaller Architekten was invited by the municipality to submit proposals for refurbishment of the historic Leutbühel Square and half-a-dozen connecting streets.

Our vision provides for a comprehensively remodeled public realm establishing several new shared-space zones (Begegnungszonen) where people walking, cycling and driving will meet in an environment that is designed to favor slow movement and social encounters between people.

Working creatively with paving, planting and water the scheme unifies a complex urban place as it creates continuity between the large scale of Lake Constance and the small scale of buildings and open spaces in the historic Bregenzer Oberstadt upon the hill.

Three wells are introduced along the key movement line of pedestrians to allow people to enjoy and touch cold fresh water as they move between the Altstadt and Lake Constance bringing traces of the lake into the everyday streetscape experience.
